Finding the Perfect Timing for Rhinoplasty
Posted on May 12, 2020 by Dr. Richard Rival
Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure, on average the surgery lasts about 2 hours and the patient may expect to stay in the surgical facility for a few hours after surgery. Most patients find the recovery period to be better than expected. There is always some facial pressure, nasal congestion and swelling. Bruising is variable between patients. Patients recovering from rhinoplasty typically need 2 weeks for bruising and swelling to go down. Again, this can vary on the patient. While most patients can work from home after a few days, the average “social downtime” is 10 – 14 days. With…

Can Rhinoplasty Make You Look Younger?
Posted on April 3, 2020 by Dr. Richard Rival
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is one of the five most popular cosmetic procedures offered today. Many people rely on it to reduce or enhance the natural shape of their nose. In fact, some people opt into rhinoplasty not for a ‘perfect’ nose, but to give themselves a nose that just better suits their face shape and features. Although rhinoplasty can offer a significant cosmetic change and improvement in aesthetics, it hasn’t traditionally been seen as a procedure for anti-aging. However, a new study published in November 2019 suggests that a nose job may be able…

Posted on March 4, 2020 by Dr. Richard Rival
It’s hard to have a great day without a good night’s rest. Those suffering through sleep apnea are all too familiar with daytime fatigue, lack of concentration, and irritability. They can affect your work, your relationships, and overall happiness. The most common treatment for sleep apnea is using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway) device, but they aren’t the best option for everyone. How Functional Rhinoplasty can Benefit Sleep Apnea If your partner frequently complains about your snoring,…

Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty, What’s the Difference?
Posted on February 27, 2020 by Dr. Richard Rival

On average, about 9/10 nose jobs use the internal approach. The reason for this is that all of the incisions occur on the inside of the nose, so there is no noticeable scarring after the procedure and less recovery time. The plastic surgeon…

Why Rhinoplasty Is Not a One-Size-Fits-All Procedure
Posted on March 12, 2019 by Dr. Richard Rival
Rhinoplasty is very popular at my Toronto-area facial plastic surgery practice among both men and women. This surgery, also called nose surgery or a nose job, is such an important specialty for me that I’ve been invited to lecture nationally and internationally on the subject. One challenging aspect that draws me to this treatment is the idea that no two rhinoplasty procedures are the same. Each patient presents a unique opportunity to sculpt a nose that’s ideal for that person and that person only. In this post, I’d like to discuss why taking a custom rhinoplasty approach is so important, and…

Revision Rhinoplasty: When Is It Necessary?
Posted on January 14, 2019 by Dr. Richard Rival
Although most people who undergo rhinoplasty are satisfied with their long-term results, some patients require a secondary procedure to achieve an outcome that’s just right. My revision rhinoplasty patients in Toronto often have very compelling reasons for undergoing a second surgery, and some of them might surprise you. The Volume Question Adding or removing volume to the nose is a common request among primary rhinoplasty patients, but sometimes the surgery goes too far—or not far enough.
